the songs are in your eyes

You know what I should be doing right now, instead of giddily plotting this? SLEEPING.

One of the problems I've had with the few B/A cop AUs I've read is that Angel is always the cop, while Buffy tends to need rescuing or be a hooker with a heart of gold. I got my rant on a month or two back about how the essence of the characters needs to be the same for me to give a damn, and, after pondering the recent SGA discussions, I've come to the conclusion that I need the power dynamics to be the same, too.

All of this is to say that in my epic cop AU, they're partners.

Newly assigned Buffy and her sister have just moved to Sunnydale; after burning down a meth lab, Buffy was transferred out of LA for public relations purposes. Their mother runs an art gallery in LA. Buffy's a cop, obviously, and I think Dawn will be a teacher, although that might not be important. They live close to each other, but not together. Buffy meets Willow and Xander as randomly as she does on the show, and their friendship develops in the same manner.

Angelus Chase, who is Angel to his friends and oh-dear-god to his enemies, is recently a widower: Darla, his wife of five years, has just died (violently, in some manner beyond Angel's control - possibly murdered), and he's finding himself lost more and more. ("The man's a rock," Gunn says to Buffy her second day on the job, "but losin' his girl hit him where he lives.") His sister, Cordelia, is a mildly successful television actress in LA, and his first partner, Doyle, followed her out there.

Gunn, a friend of Angel's from the police academy, is partnered with Kate, who is trying to work through her daddy issues. Although Angel and Gunn are fast friends, their relationship was cemented after the murder of Gunn's baby sister: Angel was the only one who had believed him when he said that no way was Alonna involved in drugs, no way, and they had wrapped up the case in a forty-eight hour marathon of coffee and kicking in doors. Gunn's boyfriend Wes teaches Latin at the high school.

Faith, a former junkie Angel put on the straight and narrow, owns the local gym, where she teaches self-defense in addition to personal fitness. Every Sunday afternoon, Angel plays practice dummy/attacker for the crowd of women that seems to grow every time he visits. Faith teases him about his latent masochism. Fred is the coroner, I think, whom Angel saved from a couple of menacing cavemen his fourth month in Sunnydale; they're close, too. Lindsey is the station's lawyer - a union rep, I think is what they're called. (If not, blame Law & Order).

Someone should write this for me.

I would read that in a HEARTBEAT.

Do you know, I think I've never read a Buffy AU? Other than one based directly in canon up to a certain point? And yet my sister and I make up cracktastic Buffy AUs ALL THE TIME. Hell, we cast Company with BtVS.

What I'm saying is: Yay copz!

And maybe I've been watching too much due South lately, but I would be hilarified if Anya were a civilian aide.

Seriously? Seriously? Buffy AUs are filled with delicious and wonderful crack, the likes of which no other fandom dares dream - and I was in the X-Files place, so I know from crack. Once you read crack, you never go back. Or somesuch.

THAT IS MY POINT. Everything is improved by the addition of cops. Except Supernatural.

Heh, Anya. She and Xander could have awkward workplace conversations all the time. Angel would grimace sympathetically but snicker in private.

Dude, I edited it to make Buffy's burning down a meth lab the reason she's in Sunnydale. I'm willing to concede my lameness.

Dude, I feel I might. I mean, it wouldn't be a long plotty fic, because that's not how I roll, but I've got Darla's death sketched out, and I think I could maybe do this as a series of vignettes. Thoughts?

This would be the first part, I think -

***

They pull to the curb of her favorite restaurant at half past eight; he moves quickly from the driver's seat to open her door and sweep his arm gallantly in front of her.

"My lady," he says, and smiles. She hits him on the chest affectionately, and they go inside. Two hours later, at that same curb, the knife slides into Darla's stomach as easily as if it were moving through air. Angel recognized the dealer he put away years earlier too late to stop him, and his gun is on the kitchen table at home. Darla had insisted on a night free of violence, for once.

He pools his jacket under her head and dials 911, but she's losing too much blood far too quickly, and the hand he presses over the wound is soaked within seconds. She lifts her own hand to his cheek, smears his face. "My goodbye kiss," she says softly, and he bends down to her lips. Catches her last breath in his own and holds it for as long as he can.

Their son dies with her on that dirty street, although Angel will not know this until seven hours and thirty-two minutes later. He will break four of the small bones in his left hand when he punches the wall, hard enough to crack the plaster.

He buries her on a Sunday.

The service is well-attended: Cordelia and Doyle stand at his left and Gunn flanks his right, Wes beside him. The men and women Angel works with are all there, as are the waitstaff from Darla's tea house. He is grateful for the support, but -

Hold off the earth, he thinks desperately, hold off the earth awhile till I have caught her once more in mine arms.

And then the priest's voice falls silent, and Angel steps forward to bury his lover with a handful of dust.

***

Thanks so much for offering!

Beta: Can cops really leave their guns?

Seriously? *flails*

I was just thinking about that, actually. Maybe he doesn't think to reach for it, or when he does, it's too late. It'd be in his shoulder holster, I think, and the con would have already fled and Darla would be stumbling to the ground, so that would work. Yeah?

Yea, that works!

April 10 2007, 06:55:17 UTC 5 years ago

Okay, and I think I would replace that bit with this:

Angel recognized the dealer he put away years earlier too late to stop him, and his suddenly clumsy hands fumble with the leather snap that holds his gun in place because Darla is stumbling, and Darla is falling -
